The Seagull

The Sausalito ferry scooting over the Bay
cruising through the waves
from sun into fog veiling Sausalito.
The water goes from calm to choppy.
The wind from warm to chilling.
A seagull hovers just above the upper deck
riding on the wake of the wind.
Its wings still, it looks down waiting.
Parents are pointing at the gull
so their children will see it.
The gull hovers just beyond reach
and stares like the ancient mariner's albatross
at the heads of the crowd
until a boy about four tears off
a piece of a hot dog bun
and flings it upward toward the gull.
It falls onto the bay.
The gull breaks away, turns
and dives into the waves.
